How We Began

Reverend Isam Morton (1833 to 1913) founded Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in 1858. During its first year, the young church baptized 40 members in a nearby stream. Today, Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church (HMBC) remains vibrant and relevant to today’s times. The congregation is now diverse and welcomes all who would seek to know our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Reverend Rodney O. Bozeman, Sr. was appointed as pastor to HMBC in June 2000. Rev. Bozeman, Sr. describes Hopewell as “a family oriented, bible-based church with a Christ-centered ministry designed for all people regardless of race, culture or religious background.”

Hopewell’s vision statement says it best:

At Hopewell we desire-- To become a culturally diverse congregation focused on the spiritual and educational development of the entire family, with an outreach to the community through services, workshops and programs.

 What we Believe at Hopewell

We believe we are saved by Grace through Faith in Jesus Christ for God’s glory.

We believe the Holy Bible is a perfect treasure of heavenly instruction:

God is its Author, Salvation is its end and Truth is its matter.

We believe, in equipping all followers of Jesus to become devoted disciples of Jesus.

We believe, the Church is the body of Christ and serves God in His world.

We believe, through true worship, the Holy Spirit transforms lives.

We believe, all we have is from God, and we must increasingly give back to God our time, talent and financial resources for God’s work in this world.

We believe Prayer is a continual opening of ourselves to God through which God can communicate with us.

We believe that each individual family worshipping collectively is essential for a strong church.
